Erta Ale is a continuously active volcano in northeastern Ethiopia. Volcanoes with lava lakes are very rare and there are only six in the world. The terrain around Erta Ale is some of the most inhospitable on earth and is also referred to as the hottest place on earth. Erta Ale means "smoking mountain" and is also known locally as 'the gateway to Hell".
